Struggling with rosacea-related redness, bumps, or flushing? You’re not alone: More than 16 million Americans are living with this frustrating skin condition. However, we’ve got good news too: At Freya’s Lair Medical Spa in Albuquerque, NM, we offer a gentle but powerful treatment called Intense Pulsed Light (IPL.)
It’s highly effective in targeting the source of skin redness, giving many rosacea patients consistently great results. In honor of Rosacea Awareness Month in April, this blog explains how IPL can effectively reduce the appearance of rosacea.
Understanding Rosacea and IPL
Typical signs of rosacea are redness, flushing, and telangiectasia (tiny visible blood vessels) in the middle of the face. Many people feel self-conscious and frustrated during rosacea flare-ups.
IPL uses pulses of broadband light energy to heat and shrink visible blood vessels. This process, called photocoagulation, helps your body absorb and dispose of the damaged vessels, reducing redness and inflammation from rosacea.
Unlike other treatments, IPL is noninvasive: No needles, surgery, or downtime.
Benefits of IPL for Rosacea
IPL doesn’t cure rosacea, but it can dramatically reduce symptoms and flare-ups. You may notice clearer skin after just a few sessions. Benefits include:
- Less facial redness
- Fewer visible blood vessels
- Smoother, more even skin tone
- Boost in skin confidence
IPL can also improve texture and help reduce flushing over time.
What to Expect With Rosacea IPL Treatment
We want your experience to feel relaxing at Freya’s Lair Medical Spa. Our team of aesthetics experts has extensive experience in light-based therapies, and we’re passionate about customizing treatments for each patient’s unique needs.
During your treatment, you’ll wear eye protection and lay back and relax for around half an hour. Patients generally find the treatment comfortable, but you may feel some warmth with a slight snapping sensation.
After each treatment, you may have a mild “sunburn” for a day or two, but that’s a sign that the light is at work within your blood vessels. Your results will build over time. As redness fades, your skin can look clearer, brighter, and more even.
Regular IPL sessions can help keep your skin clear and minimize flare-ups long term. Many patients with rosacea choose monthly IPL sessions (our Glow Club membership is a great option because it offers monthly IPL sessions!)
